- Visitors for that at today's rate
- 16,000
- Lift needed
- 33%
To reach 4%
Either convert 120 more of the same visitors, or bring 4,000 extra visitors at today's rate.
Conversion rate formula
Conversion rate = conversions ÷ visitors × 100A conversion is whatever you count as a win: a signup, a purchase, a demo request, a download. Count it the same way every time so the number is comparable month to month.
Example
12,000 visitors and 360 signups give a 3% conversion rate. To reach 4% with the same traffic you need 480 signups, 120 more. Or, at today's 3%, you'd need 16,000 visitors to get the same 480 signups.
Make the number useful
- Split it by source. 3% overall can hide 8% from newsletter readers and 0.5% from social. Spend where people convert.
- Split it by landing page. The page people arrive on matters more than the homepage.
- Watch the trend. Industry benchmarks vary wildly; your own month-over-month change is the signal.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate conversion rate?+
Divide conversions by visitors (or sessions) and multiply by 100. 30 signups from 1,000 visitors is a 3% conversion rate.
What is a good conversion rate?+
It depends heavily on what counts as a conversion. Ecommerce purchases often sit around 1–3%, newsletter signups higher. Your own trend over time matters more than an industry average.
Should I use visitors or sessions?+
Either works if you're consistent. Visitors answers “what share of people convert”; sessions answers “what share of visits convert”.
How can I improve my conversion rate?+
Find the pages where people who convert enter and where those who don't leave. Make the page match the promise of the link that brought them, and remove steps from forms.
