Bounce rate formula

Bounce rate = single-page visits ÷ total visits × 100

Typical ranges

Type of siteCommon bounce rate
Ecommerce and SaaS20–45%
Business and service sites30–55%
Landing pages60–90%
Blogs, news and docs65–90%

These are rough, widely quoted ranges, not hard rules. Compare a page with itself over time, and with similar pages on your own site.

Why it might be high

  • The page doesn't match the ad or search result that brought people there.
  • It loads slowly or breaks on mobile.
  • There's no obvious next step, like a link, a button or related content.
  • On single-page apps, the analytics doesn't record route changes, so every visit looks like one page.

Example

4,200 single-page visits out of 9,000 total is a 46.7% bounce rate, a normal number for most business sites.

Frequently asked questions

How is bounce rate calculated?+

Single-page visits divided by total visits. If 450 of 1,000 visits saw only one page, the bounce rate is 45%.

What is a good bounce rate?+

Roughly 25–55% is common for business sites and shops. Blogs and landing pages often run 60–90% and that can be perfectly fine if the page answers the question.

Is a high bounce rate bad?+

Not always. A visitor who finds your opening hours and leaves happy is a bounce. It's a problem when the page's job is to send people further, like a product or pricing page.

Why is my bounce rate suddenly very low?+

A bounce rate below about 20% often means a tracking problem, usually the script firing twice per page.

How is GA4 bounce rate different?+

GA4 counts a session as bounced only if it wasn't “engaged” (under 10 seconds, no conversion and one page). That makes GA4 bounce rates lower than the classic single-page definition this calculator uses.
